Shai Hills Resource Reserve (2026): Everything You Need to Know Before You Visit

You're barely an hour from Accra. The city's traffic and noise feel like another world. In front of you, a baboon sits on a sun-warmed rock, completely unbothered by your presence. Nearby, an antelope moves through the dry grass. Above you, dramatic granite mountain ranges rise out of the savannah. And somewhere in the hills, zebras, yes, actual zebras, are grazing. Shai Hills Resource Reserve is the closest wild experience to Accra, and it is far more extraordinary than most people expect.

Wildlife on Accra's Doorstep

The reserve is home to olive baboons, kobs, bushbucks, antelopes, green monkeys, monitor lizards, African and royal pythons, and over 150 bird species. It has been designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. The reserve also has zebras, imported from South Africa, which have now bred successfully in Ghana, with five born locally to date. Spotting zebras in Ghana is a genuinely surprising experience.

The caves (Sayu & Adwuku) and other rock shelters tucked into the granite are among the most fascinating features of the reserve. They were used by the Shai people for shelter, storage, and ceremony. Exploring them with a guide brings the history of the reserve to life in a way that no signboard can.

Trails wind through the reserve past rock formations, wildlife, and panoramic viewpoints. The climb to Mogo Hill involves scrambling over rocks and using ropes in places; it is tough in parts, but the views from the top over the savannah and toward Accra are worth every effort.

If hiking is not your preference, you can do a game drive through the reserve in your own vehicle (a vehicle entry fee applies) or hire a safari jeep at the entrance when available. Even a slow drive through the reserve almost guarantees baboon sightings.

The reserve also offers camping, rock climbing, bird watching, and quad bike tours. There is an eco-bar and seating area inside the reserve.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to April is ideal; trails are accessible, wildlife congregates near water sources, and the mornings are pleasantly cool for hiking. The wet season from April to October brings heavy rains that can make paths muddy and slippery, though birdwatching is excellent during this period. Arrive early morning for the best wildlife sightings, animals are most active before the midday heat.

Before You Visit

Go early. Wildlife is most active in the morning. The reserve opens at 8am, arrive as close to opening time as possible.

Hire a guide at the entrance. Guides are strongly recommended and sometimes required for caves and hikes. They know where the animals are and bring the cultural history of the Shai people to life.

Do not feed the baboons. They are wild animals and can be aggressive. Keep your distance and do not attempt to interact with them directly.

Bring cash. There are no ATMs nearby. Have cash for entry fees, guide fees, and any additional activities.

Wear sturdy shoes. The rocky trails and cave scrambles require proper footwear. This is not a sandal destination.

Combine with Akosombo. The Akosombo Dam and the Royal Senchi Hotel are a further drive along the same highway, a great addition to a Shai Hills day for those who want to make the most of the journey east.

Getting There from Accra

Shai Hills Resource Reserve is located along the Accra–Akosombo highway, making it the closest wildlife reserve to Ghana's capital.

At just 1 hour from Accra, Shai Hills is one of the few destinations where ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt and Yango) might actually get you there. However, the return trip is less certain, especially if you arrive late morning and spend several hours inside the reserve. Drivers are scarce in the Doryumu area, and waiting for a ride home after a full day of hiking is not ideal.

The cleaner option is a chauffeur-driven vehicle from Caradise Ghana. Your driver waits on-site, gives you total flexibility over how long you spend inside, and can take you onward to any additional stops before heading back to Accra. Fuel fully included, Wi-Fi onboard, air-conditioning throughout.
