The journey north to Tamale (approximately 600km via Kumasi) crosses multiple distinct road character zones. The Kumasi-Techiman-Kintampo section is relatively well-maintained; the Kintampo-Tamale section includes more variable surface quality and significantly reduced roadside services. Fuel availability should be verified at Techiman and Kintampo before proceeding north, as gaps between reliable fuel stations increase. The route traverses the geographical transition from forest zone to savannah, with the associated road and landscape change. Departure from Accra before 5am is standard for a same-day arrival in Tamale with a comfortable safety margin.
Night Driving: The Professional Standard Is Avoidance
Night driving on Ghana's inter-city routes carries substantially elevated risk. Unlit sections of highway, vehicles parked without hazard lights, livestock on the road, and reduced visibility of road surface deterioration all contribute to higher incident rates after dark.
